Current Covid Status in St Andrews

The whole of mainland Scotland, including St Andrews is currently in Lockdown Level 4 (Stay at Home). The Scottish Government is asking that people stay at home except for essential purposes.

There is an exception for Sports and Exercise. Golf is currently permitted as an outdoor non-contact sport. Although this is currently limited to groups of up to 2 golfers from a maximum of two households, or groups from a single household.

The general tone is that the virus is still circulating in Scottish communities, so everyone needs to minimise contact with others as much as possible.

Travel Restrictions

Arriving from Outside the UK

As of Jan 20 2021, If you are travelling to Scotland from abroad (coming from outside the UK, Ireland, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man) by law:

  • You must have proof of a negative coronavirus (COVID-19) test before travelling to Scotland from abroad. The test must be taken, even by UK citizens, up to 3 days before the journey to Scotland. For example, those travelling on a Friday, must take a test no earlier than Tuesday. A proof of your negative test is required to be presented prior to boarding the travel to Scotland.
  • You must quarantine by self-isolation for 10 days after arrival.

See the full Scottish Government Coronavirus travel guidelines here.

Travelling within Scotland

You must, by law, stay at home unless you have a reasonable excuse. If you have to travel for essential purposes, you should follow the guidance on travelling safely. You should keep journeys within the area to an absolute minimum.

Golf is a permitted activity with the following restrictions:

  • Golf can be played in groups of up to 2 people from no more than 2 households, plus any children under 12
  • This can only be local, outdoor activity, which starts and finishes at the same place (which can be up to 5 miles from the boundary of your local authority area).

Read all the rules and travel restrictions in Scotland here.

You are currently not allowed, by law, to leave the boundary of your local Authority area (For St Andrews, this is the Fife Council area – shown in white on the map below).

On the Golf Course – Covid safety restrictions

Mainland Scotland is currently in Level 4 (Stay at Home). This is the highest level of lockdown and the guidance is that people should only leave home for essential purposes. Golf is classed as an essential form of outdoor exercise.

Scottish Golf have an excellent guide to what type of Golf activity is permitted in each Level of lockdown.

We also recommend checking the Scottish Golf website for the very latest updates about what is permitted, and what safety measures must be followed on the course.

In addition to limiting the size of your golfing group, the main safety measures on golf courses are as follows:

  • All tee-times must be booked in advance
  • Maintain 2m social distancing at all times
  • When indoors, wear a face covering
  • Wash hands regularly
  • do not touch the flagstick
  • smooth over any bunkers with your golf club or foot, rakes are no longer provided

See our main Golf Transfers page for more general information and links to individual Golf Courses.
